1. How to connect rotary evaporator and vacuum pump?
Connect the rotary evaporator with a vacuum pump.Make sure the water level of the water bath is over ¾ full.
Turn on the water bath and set to desired temperature. Ensure the rotation speed is set to zero. The evaporating flask should be less than half full.
Attach the evaporating flask containing your sample to main machine by using a quick-release nut to clamp flask in place.
Switch on the vacuum pump(water aspirator).
Increase the rotation speed of the rotary evaporator. Start off slowly and gradually increase to an appropriate speed.
Lower the rotating flask into water bath to evaporate the solvent. Make sure the flask is not touching the water bath element or base of basin.
NOTE: You should not leave the rotary evaporator unattended until the pressure has equilibrated inside the flask.
Once the liquid volume inside the flask has reduced to required level, raise flask out of water bath, stop the rotation whilst placing your hand underneath the flask.
Open the vacuum release valve to release the vacuum, unclamp and remove the flask carefully.
Remove the evaporating flask and receiving flask. Turn off water bath and vacuum pump. Ensure speed dial is to zero.
Leave the rotary evaporator and work area in a safe, clean and tidy state.
2. What is a Rotary Evaporator?
A rotary evaporator is a specially designed instrument for evaporation of solvents (single-stage or straight distillation) under vacuum condition.
The evaporator consists of a heating bath with a rotating flask, in which the liquid is distributed as a thin film over the hot surface and the liquid can be evaporated easily.
The evaporation rate is regulated by factors like the heating bath temperature, the size of flask, the pressure of distillation and the speed of rotation.
3. How to use a rotary evaporator?
Firstly, ensure the receiving flask is empty.
To empty the flask, carefully remove the clip and pour any solvent into the appropriate waste bottle.
Carefully attached the receiving flask and secure with the clip.
Ensure the air bleed is open.
Turn on the rotary evaporator.
Turn on the water bath and adjust to a suitable temperature.
Ensure the adapter is secured with the metal clip.
Secure the flask.
Ensure the flask is secure until the vacuum is turned on.
Turn on the rotation to approximately two thirds of the maximum.
Turn on the vacuum pump.
Close the air bleed to create a vacuum in the rotary evaporator.
Carefully lower the flask into the water bath.
The solvent should condense and drip down into the flask.
If the water bath is at too high temperature or the vacuum is too strong or if the flask is not rotating fast enough a bumping will occurs. To relieve the bumping, reduce the vacuum using the air bleed.
Once the solvent has evaporated, the appearance of the flask will depend on the physical state of the product i.e. the residue may be a solid or an oil.
When finished, raise the flask and turn off the rotation.
Open the air bleed and turn off the vacuum pump.
Ensure the flask is secure whilst the vacuum is off.
Carefully unclip and remove the flask.
When you have finished with the rotary evaporator, ensure the water pump and power switches are turned off.
If necessary, empty the flask of solvent.

Yes – this is possible with certain models of rotary evaporator.It is possible to add further liquid or solvent into the rotary evaporator even when the unit is in use and under vacuum. The refilling valve accessory must be installed
